Fixed Mindset vs Growth Mindset

Life can be a struggle sometimes and taking that leap to encounter new challenges can often be stressful.  This week our team meetings have been all about what keeps us in our comfort zone. It can seem much more appealing to carry on doing what we have always done as nothing can harm you, yet many of us feel like our lives are missing an unknown ingredient.  If we could just put our finger on why we fear the unknown and don’t take the steps, we know we need to take? Why not?  The reason may be due to a contradiction between your fixed mindset vs. growth mindset.

What is a fixed mindset?

A fixed mindset is the way in which we believe our character, personality and intelligence can’t be changed despite desiring more. We believe that we can’t be stretched to reach our goals and affirm negative thoughts in our mind rather than positive ones which can hold us back in a number of ways.

What is a growth mindset?

A growth mindset thrives off the challenges that are faced, oblivious to failures that may occur and if they do, they are perceived as stepping stones on a learning platform which can enhance progression.

What can you do if you have a fixed mindset?

1. Understand the contradiction

The voice in your head may be telling you that you are fooling yourself – that you could never cope with the challenge you are set to face. You worry about all of the criticism that may come your way if you fail and also how you may make a fool of yourself. Yet, when you think of this criticism, you feel yourself become frustrated by knowing you can do it, but not having the confidence to push yourself. Sometimes it is just enough to recognise that this is what is happening.

2. Know that you have a choice

Although it may feel as though your anxieties are giving you no choice in the matter, the choice is entirely yours. Don’t let your anxiety take over the lifestyle you crave. You have one life and you should live it. Learn to stretch yourself to reach your goals and try to take every opportunity that comes your way.

  1. Rachel (aka Aloe Mummy) I completely agree. It is hard when you’ve sat in your ‘comfort zone’ for so long. I recently read The Big Leap and it talks about something very similar. Well done Rachel as the first strp to getting a growth mindset is accepting your in a fixed and gently tip toeing into our zone of genius. xx
